Both Teams to Score (BTTS) is one of the most popular betting markets out there. While the Home/Draw/Away market is the most popular still, the BTTS market is often where people turn to when it’s too hard to call a result. In this article we’re going to talk about why BTTS is a crucial market that you need to learn more about an a football betting strategy that should be in your arsenal.

While researching this article we came across plenty of websites that show research that Both Teams to Score occurs in about 50% of football games all across the world. For fair betting odd then we’d expect odds of 2.0 (Evens). But bookies don’t give fair prices and we tend to see BTTS bets being offered (between evenly matched teams) from 1.80-1.90 usually. Of course, there are plenty of occasions when we’ll see lower odds, for example in the Icelandic league where the goals seem to rain in; it’s quite often to see the odds for BTTS: Yes, as low as 1.50.

We also regularly see games in Europe’s top leagues (the Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue Un, La Liga and the Premeira Liga) being offered quite low when we have top team facing each other, for example, in last season’s run-in for the Premier League title Manchester City faced Liverpool where the lowest odds for a BTTS: Yes bet were available with 1XBet for just 1.59. The highest we saw were with Pinnacle for 1.70. The game ended 2:2.

So while games from across the globe usually finish with both teams scoring in 50% of their games can we exploit this for value. Well, yes and no, first of all if that’s all the info we’re going on then for something to have value we’d need odds above 2.0 for it to be considered a ‘value bet’. However, we’d need to dive further into the stats of both teams involved and then make a more considered choice on whether to take the bet or not.

Looking deeper into some research from some academic papers on betting we found two very interesting stats. One set of students when studying betting trends found that when an Away Favourite (odds under Evens) was playing a Home Underdog (Odds from 2.50 and up) they found that BTTS landed in 65% of matches. If we take that 65% as an Implied Probability then that would translate into betting odds of 1.54, meaning that, if for example we had West Ham taking on Leicester this weekend and the odds for BTTS: Yes were at 1.85, we’d have a potential value bet based on this data alone. Of course, we’d need to dig into the stats but looking into last season’s Premier League stats we see that BTTS landed in 79% of the Hammer’s home games last season and in 84% of Leicester’s away league clashes.

In the second academic paper the people doing the research didn’t special in only football they also looked at results, both football and American football and they found that bookies regularly price home underdogs incorrectly meaning, according to their research that if you bet on the Home team to win you’d earn a profit over the American football season. In European football they had similar results. Why does this happen?

Punters want to bet on a winner and when a strong away team shows up; Liverpool, Man City, Real Madrid, PSG then people are going to lump on them to win away from home. As football fans though we know that Home Advantage is massive in football and pretty much disappears during the pandemic. Thankfully it’s back now and we see just how important it is for every home side.
