Serie A Outright Betting 2021/22

12th August 2021

Previews

The Serie A season returns on the weekend of the 21st to 23rd of August. Inter will be eager to make a good defence of their title and try and win it again while Juventus will be looking to take back what they think belongs to them. We’ll also take a look at the times most likely to be relegated and see if any value can be found in the Top Goalscorer market.

Serie A Outright Betting 2021/22: Champions

No real surprises here if you’re guessing that Juventus top the list in the betting odds. Indeed while doing our research we only came across one bookie who was offering a price on Juventus to Win this season’s Serie A title at above Evens (above 2.0). Interestingly they had one of the lowest odds for Inter to retain the title.

On average the bookies’ price for Juventus to win what would be their 37th league title is at 1.90, the highest we’ve seen was at 2.10, the lowest being at 1.75. Inter are second in the betting odds, their average odds are at 4.14, the highest we saw was 5.0, the lowest was 3.0. Their title hopes will have taken a large dent though over the last weekend when their top goalscorer Romelu Lukaku returned to former club Chelsea. He had been in phenomenal form for Inter over his two seasons there, scoring 47 goals over 72 games and really powered them to the Serie A title last season. The Belgian star is going to be a big miss for Inter and they’ve not had a great transfer window thus far.

Juventus haven’t exactly been busy with their transfer dealings either but they already have Cristiano Ronaldo, Alvaro Morata and Paulo Dybala. Atalanta and Napoli make up the next two teams but really their odds are so high that the bookies aren’t really giving them much of a chance. Both teams are excellent on their day but until Atalanta learn to concede fewer goals they can’t put up a sustained title challenge. Roma could be interesting this season, with Jose Mouninho taking over they may surprise a few this season. Jose’s game mightn’t the Premier League anymore but last season Antonio Conte certainly showed that a team that prides itself on defence first, attack second can still win the Italian championship.

Serie A Outright Betting 2021/22: Relegation

As per usual with European league the bulk of the favourites to go down are the teams that have just come up. Empoli romped to the Serie B championship last season, losing just three games over their league season. They should have a good chance of survival here. Salernitana were runners up to Empoli with Venezia winning the promotion playoff. Both teams did well last season, losing just seven and nine games respectively however, going up against the best of Serie A they’re going to find it tough. There’s not much value in those priced but they could be taken now and cashed out after a few months for some profit.

Serie A Outright Betting 2021/22: Top Scorer

With Romelu Lukaka going to Chelsea, it looks like the only challenger that Cristiano Ronaldo has in the way of winning his second Capocannoniere title is Atalanta’s Duvan Zapata according to the betting odds. Ronaldo scored 29 goals last season and has scored a total of 81 goals for Juventus over 97 games. Zapata is a great player, he’s scored 56 goals over his 102 games for Atalanta but, barring a long-term injury to Ronaldo he’s unlikely to be able to keep pace with Portugal’s Ronaldo, especially since he takes the majority of Juventus’ penalties and freekicks.

Lazio’s Ciro Immobile was Serie A top scorer in both 2019/20 and 2017/18, he’s probably the best of the outsiders here. Were he a few years younger and less prone to injury we’d not dismiss AC Milan’s Zlatan Ibrohimovic, however, at 39 years now, while still an amazing player, he misses too many games to be in the reckoning here.
