France take on Switzerland on Monday night in Bucharest in the Last 16 of this summer’s European Championships. Over France’s last 15 matches they’ve only lost a single match, indeed, the run goes back to their last 23 matches. Over their last five though they’ve won three and drawn two. So far over the tournament they showed against Germany that they can sit back and soak up pressure and punish teams with their blistering counter attacks. Against Hungary their weaknesses were there for all to see and Hungary really frustrated the tournament favourites for 90 minutes. Against Portugal after a tight first half the game opened and we saw two teams going at each other and over the balance of play the final result was fair although it must be said that for the last 10 minutes both teams barely left their own half knowing they’d done enough to qualify for the Last 16.

Switzerland haven’t had the easiest of routes to the Last 16 and certainly didn’t make it easy on themselves. Against Italy they ended up losing 3-0 and, well, it was a strange match in that Switzerland didn’t really do anything wrong, Italy were just incredibly good. Against Turkey they finally showed how good they can been when they click and were 3-1 winners on the night, their fast-paced passing game came to the fore and were deserved winners.

So what will we see here? Well, France’s manager Didier Deschamp is quite a conservative manager and we’re likely to see France allowing Switzerland to come at them from the get go. Deschamp knows that he has one of the best defences in the competition and they should be able to take whatever damage that results from Switzerland knocking on the door. As the Swiss attack and gain some confidence that’s when France will likely hit them hard, as we saw against Germany and Portugal all it takes is one through ball from Paul Pogba or Antoine Griezzmann to either Kylian Mbappe or Karim Benzema and France will be bearing down on Switzerland’s goal with absolute fury.
