Bottom of the table Sampdoria welcome fifth placed Roma to the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris on Sunday afternoon for their Serie A matchday eight clash. The Blucerchiati have just one win to their name this season and are rock bottom of the table on just three points. Roma’s season has taken a little bit of a wobble and the international break may have come at the perfect time as they had just won two out of their last five matches. Can they get back to winning ways against a team down on their luck here?

Sampdoria vs Roma Betting Tips and Predictions: Sampdoria

Former Premier League winning manager Claudio Ranieiri was unveiled as new Sampdoria manager just a few days ago, of course, he had been Roma manager until he failed to get them into the Champions League for this season. It had been his second stint as Roma manager. Indeed this is the ‘tinkerman’s’ ninth job with a Serie A team, which is pretty bonkers. Then again, bonkers is why many of us love Serie A.

Sampdoria’s season has been awful, their worst in many, many years, having lost six from seven of their matches so far and only winning one, a 1-0 win over Torino a month ago, they look a sorry bunch. Who better then to get in than Ranieri? The Roman has shown over the years that there aren’t many better than him in the business at turning a team’s fortunes around, but boy he has his work cut out for him with Samp.

The team have only scored four goals in their seven league matches, conceding an eye-watering 16. Ranieri needs to quickly shore up that defence and restore some rigidity. The next few weeks though could be fruitful for the Genoese side, their three matches following this is are all against bottom half sides and these will be the matches where they can make up some lost ground. Saying that, Ranieiri will set his stall out appropriately here against Roma and will look to keep them scoreless and frustrated for the ninety minutes.

In team news, Polish midfielder Karol Linetty is a doubt but if he’s fit he’ll make the lineup.

Sampdoria vs Roma Betting Tips and Predictions: Roma

As said above Roma’s season hasn’t exactly gone to plan, in their last two matches they drew away with Austrian side Wolfsberger in the Europa League and couldn’t beat Cagliari at home in their most previous Serie A match. However, they’ve only lost one match this season so far in all competitions, a 0-2 defeat to Atalanta and really, with this Atalanta side there’s no shame in that at all.

Looking at their away form in the league, they’ve gone seven matches now without defeat on the road. A run which has seen them winning three and drawing the other four. New manager Paulo Fonseca has a job on his hands here with Roma too, the fans are notorious for having little patience. This is a club that has two dedicated radio stations, not to mention the other sports radio stations in the capital, the people of Rome are obsessed with how the team does and they literally expect miracles. Time is already ticking on Fonseca’s time in Rome and while Roma’s position of fifth after seven matches looks fair, the fans expect more. Especially so since they made 12 signings over the summer.

In team news, Roma are in dire straits; Edin Dzeko, Amadou Diawara, Davide Zappacosta, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Mert Cetin, Devid Eugene Bouah, Cengiz Ünder, Diego Perotti, Alessio Riccardi are all injured, with the final five on that list the only ones in contention for making an appearance on Sunday. Fonseca is due to give a press conference on Friday with injury updates.
