Manage Your Bankroll – Planning Out Your Staking Strategy

Articles

This article will seek to offer a basic introduction to a question that comes up a lot from bettors up and down the country, “How much should I bet?”. The answer to this question in pure monetary terms will be different for each person and is entirely dependent on how much money you can afford to lose and how much you want to risk. This sum of money should form your betting bank.

Deciding your betting bank

You should only ever bet what you can afford to lose. This is important for your well-being as well as your bank balance. Betting should be enjoyable and never stressful. You can do this in a number of ways, either by choosing a weekly/monthly amount or a bigger lump sum which you hope to use indefinitely. It can be £10, £50 or £5,000. Everyone will have different amounts but the strategy behind the stakes will always remain the same.

Creating your staking plan

Your staking plan is how you will decide the amount you place on each bet. This will be a percentage of your overall bank. There is of course the variables of the odds of each bet that should be considered. Odds of evens or lower would dictate a larger stake than odds of 3.00 (2/1) or higher.

For example, let’s assume your bank roll is £100, you will likely want to use a fixed stake method which factors in the odds of the bet. The following shows the recommended stake expressed as a % of your bankroll.

A basic points strategy…

8-10%: This is the top end of your staking strategy and should be used for bets of less than evens. This should only be used when you’re super confident that it will come in.

5-8%: This is the upper mid-range of your stakes and should be used for bets which are around evens and represent a good value bet which you are confident in.

3-5%: This is a stake for when you are feeling a little less confident but think you’ve spotted a decent bet. This would generally be used for odds of around 2/1 and above.

1-3%: The lower end of your staking strategy, this represents the smallest stakes you would place on a bet and as such this should be reserved for long shots.

Now, humans being humans may mean that you naturally stray away from your strategy from time to time but it’s important to stay disciplined. The last thing you want to be doing is constantly topping up your bankroll.
